Last night I was introduced to RuPaul’s Drag Race on Netflix. I’ve seen the show before – but never sat through an entire episode. My sister was so excited I agreed to watch the 1st episode of season 3 with her.
The episode title was “The Queen Who Mopped Xmas”. (I learned that mopped means stole in Drag lanuage). It begins by introducing the 12 contestants by them entering a room (in drag) one by one… sizing each other up. This was ridiculous to me. My favorite is Stacy Layne Matthews… here is why… she’s a larger drag queen that just seems like she’d always rather be napping… and that is hilarious to me. This is Stacy…
There was a photo shoot contest, then another challenge where they had to create a Christmas look from what they bought for $50 at a thrift shop. This all reminded me of Project Runway but like in an alternate universe. Then they walked the run way – the judges picked the winner and two people to be at the bottom. What happens to the two people at the bottom? THEY LIP SYNC FOR THEIR LIFE. What?! My sister explained this to me. It’s exactly what it sounds like. The two drag queens lip sync a song (at the same time) and who ever performs it better stays. Ellen warned me (thank goodness) that they can get REALLY into it and often times rip off their wigs… which is disturbing to her. And she was right… they both ripped off their wigs and I felt uncomfortable.
